This remarkable aid to research provides the researcher with the names and many details concerning individuals recorded as residing in the greater Los Angeles area between the city’s founding in 1781 to the early 1870s, arising from a fresh line-by-line reading by the author of not only the region’s padrones and censuses but also such resources as Bancroft’s and Engelhardt’s bulky histories, the Mission records, the 1872 city directory, many of the other histories, memoirs, and reminiscences of the people of the era, newspapers of the time, and more, all distilled into an easy-to-use and homogeneous alphabetical listing. This includes not only prominent figures but also the obscure everyday inhabitants, both male and female, both adult and juvenile, of the area—Californio, Mexicano, Blacks, Anglos, Indians, Chinese—anyone who was present. Also listed are many places, things, and events pertaining to the era, some with lengthy entries. This had been built by the author over a period of decades to assist him in the composition and footnoting of his other books. Its convenience and utility to him proving its value, he now makes it available for all to use in the hope that they too will find it of assistance in their work. But much more than a dry collection of names and dates, these Notes also provide anecdotes and tales of the life of the time such that even the casual reader just glancing through the pages at random will find much that is entertaining and interesting—these Notes on Old Los Angeles will transform and enrich the reader’s understanding of the varied and exciting heritage of Los Angeles and Southern California. Offered here is volume 4 (the complete set is of six volumes, each offered separately). Read more
